MANILA, Philippines – Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds, Wells Fargo pulled off a major upset against the highly-favored Open Access, 76-73, to walk away with the 2015 BPO Classics – 2nd Conference Intermediate Division trophy on Sunday, January 10 at the 3,000-capacity Makati Coliseum in Makati City.
Although Open Access was setting on the championship stage as the heavy favorite following a dominant run in the elimination round, Wells Fargo defied all its doubters with the heroics from Ralph Norris Shappit, who bombarded the opposing squadron with 25 points.
Alvin Diasanta Dela Cruz also chipped in 12 points to Wells Fargo’s victory Open Access BPO, while Alberto Rodolfo Rodil contributed a double-double output for his winning team as he hauled ten points and 12 rebounds.
However, Open Access did not go down in a hard-hitting fixture versus Wells Fargo as the green-and-gray troop was led by Ron Nineza, who tallied with 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists and three blocks.
Julius Caingcoy amassed 16 markers for Open Access, while Jomar Domingo and Miko Co pitched 14 and 10 points respectively.
Before falling short to Wells Fargo in the finals, Open Access was highly touted to win the tournament as the aforementioned brigade gloriously outlasted six other teams in the first phase of the competition and then easily booked a championship appearance with a 116-102 win over Harte Hanks in the semi-finals.
