In Pool 2 action of the Next5Hoops Metro Manila South Leg last Sunday, July 31, the Chargers bounced back from their opening day defeat and took care of AVISO, 61-53. DECCA 8990 escaped with a three point win over Don Bosco Makati while Tsek Repablik opened their campaign with a victory over E.T. Homes.
Jan Michael Asido of the Chargers poured in 19 points and he had help from Gill Cambell and Winifredo Rivera who each had 10 points.
The Chargers only shot 30 percent from the field, but they played better defense and limited AVISO to only 25 percent shooting. The Chargers also forced 18 turnovers from their opponent. AVISO’s Jeff Quiambao had 10 points in the loss.
On the day’s fourth game, DECA 8990 just managed to escape Don Bosco Makati with a 74-71 victory. Jose Mamer Navarro had 21 points in the win.
DECA 8990 tried to pull away in the second period when they unleashed 24 points while limiting Don Bosco to just eight. Don Bosco was down by 17 points entering the fourth period but made a huge rally towards the end.
The men from Makati was able to cut the lead to just a single point with less than two minutes remaining on a jump shot by Mauro Lumba, who had a solid double-double performance of 16 points and 13 boards. But late-game rebounding and clutch free throws helped DECA 8990 maintain their lead and the win.
Rounding up Pool 2 was a win by Tsek Repablik over E.T. Homes with a score of 91-86. Tsek Repablik had strong scoring outings from four players. June Crespo had 19 points, Dannybelle Diocampo was a monster with 18 and 17, and Ralph Erold Sapitula and Francis Guiriba combined for 28 points and 17 rebounds off the bench.
It was Tsek Repablik’s first game of the tournament while E.T. Homes suffered their first loss in two games. E.T. Homes’ Roger Domingo led all scorers with his 34 points but it was not enough to catapult his team to the victory.
