Grease Monkey Wins by 51 points, Aling Lucy and WarFit continue to stack up victories

If you’re going to win, might as well win big – this might as well have the theme of the 2016 Next5Hoops Metro Manila South Leg tournament (Pool 1) games last Sunday, August 14.

Grease Monkey walloped the SH Flight with a 123-72 beating. It was the largest margin of the victory this season. The Monkeys scored 54-34 at halftime and never looked back. They continued their scoring rampage in the last two quarters, exploding for 69 points in those 20 minutes, just three points shy of SH Flight’s total of 72.

Three players from the Grease Monkey scored at least 20 points. Karlo Sumabat top-notched with 25, Niku Benson Valles followed with 23 (plus five boards and seven dimes), and Emilio Callelero II had 22 and 9.

Rob Angeles had 20 points for SH Flight, who lost their third game in a row for a 0-3 record.

Aling Lucy’s Panciteria won big to start the day’s set of games with a 95-72 thumping of Baller Hood. After losing their first match, Aling Lucy has made it two in a row. A balanced scoring attack did the trick for the Panciteria as five players scored in double-figures.

Franklin Mancio had the most with 19 points. Mancio has been a stud for his team, averaging 20.5 PPG in their three outings. Aside from scoring, Aling Lucy also did its job on the defensive end. They limited Baller Hood to just 33 percent shooting, including 3-for-20 from beyond the arc. Baller Hood’s top scorer, Dred Gatchalian, only had 12 points.

Before Grease Monkey’s monstrous 51-point win, WarFit Basketball notched their fourth straight victory of the tournament with an 80-69 victory over Street Chef. It wasn’t a huge margin, but the win kept WarFit on top of the team standings.

Street Chef’s Jobert Castro made a basket to cut WarFit’s lead to just six points with 58 seconds left in the ball game. They valiantly tried to steal the game but they just ran out of time. A Mark Deang Espero jumper made it 78-69 and left no room for a comeback.

Dominic Reyes of Street Chef put up 29 points to lead all scorers but failed to get the win.

WarFit basketball remains undefeated as Street Chef joins Baller Hood and SH Flight with identical 0-3 records.
