StarTek and Assurant Drub Foes, CF, Telus and UnitedHealth Survive Nailbiters

StarTek kicked off an action-packed weekend in the Intermediate Division of the 2016 BPO Classics with an 83-68 drubbing of HSBC last November 12.

StarTek broke the game wide open in the third quarter and pushed the lead to as high as 19 with over seven minutes left to play.

It was a group effort for StarTek with four players contributing at least 12 points and five others with at least four points.

Nestor Quitan had 16 points for StarTek, which survived getting outrebounded by dominating the paint.

Four players also carried the scoring cudgels for HSBC, but it just wasn’t enough to stop StarTek.

Also at STI Academic Center Cubao, Assurant blew by Concentrix, 84-57.

It was Assurant’s game from the get-go and was never threatened for the rest of the game, even leading by as many as 34 points midway the fourth.

Assurant went on cruise control thanks to 14 steals that it turned into 24 points off turnovers and 14 off the fast break.

Rod Balbuena registered a game-best 21 points that went with six rebounds and eight assists while Jordan Melaño and Bernard Navarro added 19 and 17 points, respectively and combined for seven steals.

Only Erwin Macapanas finished in double-digit scoring for Concentrix with 11 points on top of nine rebounds.

Over at EJG Lucky Gym in Paranaque, Center Functions (Accenture) opened the triple header last November 13 with a 65-62 thriller over The Results.

Niño Shappit was the hero for Center Functions after connecting on the game-winning triple with .6 seconds remaining. He finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Ren Manzon also caught fire from three en route to a 15-point, team-best showing that also went with nine boards and four assists. Steven Camaya added 14.

In the other games, Telus survived Open Access, 79-71, while UnitedHealth Group withstood Sykes, 76-70.

Al-Mowallad stuffed the statsheet with 26 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Apostol chipped in 20 points and seven rebounds for Telus.

Open Access, which only had seven players, leaned heavily on Julius Caingoy, who finished with an equally impressive statline with 24 points and 19 rebounds.

Meanwhile, Roberto Valdez and David Santos carried UnitedHealth Group with 18 and 17 points, respectively. The former also collared 13 rebounds.

UnitedHealth Group hung tough in the fourth quarter amid the fightback from Sykes which came to as close as four points with under 2 minutes to play.

Cyd Marcellino led Sykes, whose measly eight turnovers still translated to 15 points for the opponents, with 17 points and eight rebounds.
