Yokohama Overpowers Hokage Ballers for Crown

Yokohoma proved to be the better team and clinched Recreational Division Championship of 2016 Next5Hoops Metro Manila Central Leg Qualifier last February 4.

With big enough cushion, Yokohama slipped past Hokage Ballers, 70-66, in the Final game held at Camp Crame Gym in Quezon City.

After a strong performance in the first three quarters, Yokohoma held on to a 14-point advantage with a little over eight minutes left in the game.

But Hokage Ballers, who recovered from a seven-point first quarter, made a last ditch rally that saw the lead down to just three after a triple by Joe Burata with 29 ticks left.

Dumray Geraldo froze the final score for Yokohama with a split from the stripe as Hokage Ballers misfired on its final attempts from downtown.

Yokohama won despite letting Hokage Ballers capitalize on its turnovers and second chances, thanks to better 3-point conversion and ball movement.

Pong Olayres had the hottest hand for Yokohama, finishing with 22 points built on four triples to claim the Most Valuable Player of the Finals plum.

Jered Mendoza and Geraldo were also instrumental in the championship victory with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Hokage Ballers, who was once again led by Burata, had a 17-5 advantage in points off TOs and 13-6 edge in second chance points but never tasted the lead.

Burata had a team-best 20 points for Hokage Ballers while Prince Martin and Felix Domingo had 10 markers apiece.
