Upsets Highlight 2nd Day of South Recreational Playoffs as Top Seeds Fall

The Recreational Plus Division playoffs of the 2017 Next5Hoops Metro Manila South Leg Qualifiers got even more interesting as top seeds fell in the second day of action in the tournament.

Pound Dasma and PDF pulled off uspets over higher-ranked Flight and Shogun, respectively, to secure spots in the last eight of the tournament.

A good start was the key for Pound Dasma as they overcame Flight, 80-74.

The winning side raced to a 21-14 opening quarter lead. Drawing off the confidence earned from the good start, Pound Dasma protected the advantage well for the next three quarters to come out on top.

Nhavel Faisal poured in 25 points on 10-of-18 shooting and 4-of-7 three-point shooting and dished out five assists. Eric Fajardo added 11 points and 13 boards as five scored in double-figures for Pound Dasma.

Bry Ramirez also had 25 points for Flight.

Meanwhile, PDF used a 28-19 third quarter to establish control over Shogun and pull away.

It was a close battle throughout, but PDF had their way in the penultimate quarter to turn things around.

Pipoy Hempisao came up big again, dropping 26 markers. Marwin Montejo chipped in 19 points.

Justine Lopez led Shogun with 14 points and 19 boards.

Lastly, 3W Builders prevailed to oust U5S Sunseekers, 105-102.

It was a back-and-forth duel from start to finish. 3W Builders had a comfortable 100-91 lead and appeared to be on their way to an easy win, but the Sunseekers suddenly went on a huge run to cut it down to 103-102 in the dying minutes.

JC Jutie sank two crucial free throws even as Jovic Labrador missed a three-point try in the end as 3W Builders escaped.

Angelo Corpuz led 3W with 24 points, six assists, and two steals. Joel Agustin and Nano Alvarado added 16 markers apiece. Jovel Mendoza led U5S with 28.
